What an interesting movie! I really enjoyed Inception and I'm glad it was the first movie I saw with a D-Box motion seat synchronized with the movie. There were some scenes the seat definitely improved for me.
I did have one HUGE continuity problem with this movie, which I won't mention, since I don't want to give anything away, but I think they really dropped the ball with the ending scene. If you'd like to know more after you've seen it, contact me and I'll explain.
For the most part, I liked that Inception was a fairly complex movie that entertained and surprised me quite a bit. It's a pretty long movie (2:20), but I think most of that is necessary for setting up the story and going deep enough into the complexity of the plot. I didn't sit there wondering when the movie would end and probably wouldn't have realized how long Inception took if I didn't know it was long heading into the movie.
If you like Sci-Fi action movies, Inception is one you should definitely see in a theatre. I'd suggest going for a theatre with perfect digital clarity and D-Box motion seats or the closest IMAX theatre. I'm sure both will enhance the experience of Inception greatly.

In ways, I think I enjoyed The Twilight Saga: Eclipse movie better than the original Twilight movie. Though I thought it was horrible that they recast the role of Victoria, I do think Bryce Dallas Howard did a much better job as Victoria. Also, they clearly spent a lot more money on the special effects for New Moon and Eclipse than they did the original movie. Since they followed the story of the book as well (if not better), the result was definitely a more enjoyable movie.
They did a great job with the story and didn't leave out as many key components as they seemed to in the first movie. I'm really looking forward to the Breaking Dawn movie when they release that. If they do as well with that movie, it should be amazing.
If you like the Twilight series, you've probably already seen this movie, but if not, see it soon. It'll probably leave most IMAX theatres this weekend when Inception is released. So many more movies are being released in IMAX these days. They're clearly trying to get to people like me who don't see many movies in theatres that aren't released in IMAX and/or 3D.

I loved the book, so I had to see the movie even though I didn't expect it to be very well done. I was pleasantly surprised. They did a great job with The Time Traveler's Wife adaptation. A few story lines were completely eliminated, but that's to be expected any time a book is made into a movie. I don't think anything major was changed and the changes they made seemed to work well for the movie. I missed some of the plot lines, but I understand why they had to be cut due to time constraints.
The special effects were done a lot better than I'd expected. The disappearing and reappearing happened a lot more slowly than I'd imagined it and it looked really neat in HD. I definitely recommend renting this in Blu-ray if you have it.

Avatar is definitely as visually amazing as advertized, though I was pretty disappointed with the use of 3D overall. I definitely recommend seeing Avatar in IMAX 3D if available and digitally or 3D if IMAX is not available in your area. It's a beautiful movie. Did Avatar deserve to be one of the 10 (way too many - I think they should break them up like the Golden Globes do) Oscar nominations for Best Picture? I don't think so. The story isn't all that unique or super interesting. It was very predictable.
It is amazing what amazing visual effects can do for a story, since people talk about Avatar as if it's a lot better than they would without the beautifully designed visuals. Without the special effects and amazingly well done graphics, Avatar would be another standard Sci-Fi movie with a very predictable story line. With the special effects, Avatar is a movie I highly recommend seeing before it leaves IMAX 3D theatres early next month (when Alice in Wonderland starts). I'm sure it will be playing a lot longer in regular theatres, but IMAX is the way to go for a movie this visually stunning.
If I were just grading the visuals, they'd probably get an A or A-. If I'd seen it in a standard theatre, I'd give them an A+, but the 3D effects were pretty disappointing. The movie as a whole definitely doesn't do as well.

I doubt I would have known about this movie if a friend didn't tell me I should see it and even if I had found out about it, I probably would have avoided it, since it looks too violent. There were definitely scenes where I wished they were speaking English or Spanish so I could close my eyes and still understand what they were saying, but most of the movie wasn't too gory.
The story of Let the Right One In is very interesting and only overly predictable in one area (which I won't mention). The cast is good and the story of a vampire that concentrates on the issues of trying to exist in society without concentrating on the sexual aspect is refreshing.
I definitely recommend renting Let the Right One In.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed this movie more if I'd seen it in a theatre. The special effects were very well done and even on Blu-ray disc, you can't quite recreate the movie theatre feel without a projection screen and I just have a large LCD HDTV.
I wasn't too impressed with what they did for the story. Perhaps it's been too long since I saw the original Disney movie, but I thought the kids in the original were actually kids, not aliens using the bodies of kids. Maybe I should see if I can find the original on the Disney Channel to check out that story line.
In any case, the movie was worth renting, but not as good as I think it could have been. The special effects are very well done and the movie has a good cast.

I definitely recommend seeing this in IMAX before theatres replace it with the new Harry Potter movie. I was glad that Harry Potter didn't move into IMAX as soon as it opened, since I didn't have time to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen before Harry Potter opened. This movie is probably the best I've seen with seemless transitions from the IMAX scenes to the scenes not shot in IMAX format. There was only one scene where it was a bit annoying, since it jumped back and forth quickly a few times.
If you liked the last Transformers and enjoy action movies, you'll like this one. It's exactly what you'd expect of the sequel and I'd go see the next one. They did a good job with the story and I loved all the little transformers in the beginning. Very entertaining.
The special effects were (of course) a large portion of the movie, so if you have a chance to catch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in IMAX, I definitely recommend that. If not, it's still worth seeing on a big screen for the special effects.

I'm not a fan of the original Star Trek (TV show or movies). I enjoyed what I saw of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. I also liked most of the movies with those Star Trek characters (at least enough to have seen them in a theatre).
I was really interested in this movie, since they seemed to have a very good cast and I liked the idea of seeing the story with better special effects and acting (I'm really not a fan of William Shatner). Clearly, as soon as they announced that the new Star Trek was being released in IMAX, that was the way I had to see it!
I think the Star Trek movie was very well done. The one person in our group who had watched the whole original series thought they explained things in a way that worked with the original Star Trek and really enjoyed the movie. The cast is amazing, the special effects are well done, and it's a good story. What more could one ask for in a movie on a screen that big? Definitely catch Star Trek in IMAX while you can and if not, see it on the biggest screen you're able to find.

I had heard of the books by Stephenie Meyer, but hadn't read them until the hype for the movie got pretty strong and a friend of mine told me she loved all four of the books. So, I read the entire Twilight series before seeing the movie Twilight. In spite of that, I still enjoyed the movie.
Robert Pattinson does not look like the Edward Cullen I pictured, but everyone has their ideal type, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility that someone would think he's the most attractive guy she's ever seen. He's very attractive, just not what I pictured. I think Kristen Stewart is the perfect Bella. She's beautiful, but is believable as someone who doesn't realize she's incredibly attractive.
The story changes that were made weren't too major. Clearly, a lot of the book had to be cut and some of the things they cut were parts I might have kept in, but they did a good job with the story. The disappointing thing about Twilight is that they didn't seem to spend enough money on the special effects. They knew from the sales of the books that the movie would do well initially in the theatre. I think if they'd spent a lot of money on the special effects and made it look more realistic that the movie would have done better in theatres long term and they would have made that money back. Hopefully, when they make the next movies they'll spend more and make everything look more realistic.
I enjoyed the movie and if you love the Twilight books I'm sure you've seen it the movie already, but it's definitely worth renting if you can't see it in a theatre.

Perhaps it was all the hype. Perhaps it was the parts of the previews I saw.... Whatever it was that raised my hopes, I expected more from Iron Man. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie and I'm glad that I rented it and that I own a great TV. However, I wasn't super impressed. I thought The Dark Knight was quite a bit better and have enjoyed quite a few movies based on characters from the comics more than I liked Iron Man.
The cast is amazing and the story is okay, but not stellar. The costume is good and perhaps if I had seen Iron Man in a movie theatre I would have been more impressed. Worth renting, but not close to my favorite movie of 2008.

I didn't really know what to expect from this movie, since Ic try not to watch many previews once I know I want to see a movie and I'll watch anything with John Cusack. I didn't realize that the movie was based on a book, but I've added it to my long list of books I want to read.
Martian Child is a touching story about a boy who believes he's from Mars and the man who adopts him. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, in spite of the one glaring error they made when they made the movie and were trying to give Dennis some more characteristics that set him apart from the typical child. It bothered me throughout the movie that this boy who was extremely intelligent (as they mention and demonstrate several times in the movie) and who thinks he is from Mars (perhaps he is, I won't spoil that for you) would think he needs a weight belt on Earth to hold him down, since the gravitational pull on Earth isn't strong enough. They got the sun part right (he always wore his sunglasses and sunblock and said the sun was too bright), but the last time I checked the reason the Earth has a brighter sun than Mars is that it's closer to the sun. Earth's mass is also greater and when you combine these two things together, they mean that the gravitational pull is stronger on Earth than Mars. If the gravitational pull on Mars were stronger, you'd weigh more on Mars. You weigh more on Mars than you would on the Moon, but you still weigh significantly less on Mars. I know they kicked Pluto out of the planet list, but I'm pretty sure Mars is still closer to the Sun than the Earth.
I definitely recommend renting this movie if you missed it in theatres. It deals very well with the obstacles faced when a child is abandoned and has to cope with foster homes and the idea of being left behind.

Another wonderful movie from Pixar! I see few movies in theatres these days (thanks to my great new TV and Netflix, I'm not missing much). I try to see those I want to see that are released in IMAX and those with special effects I know will look better on the big screen, but I often don't find the time. I always make time for Pixar movies and (as always) I'm glad I saw WALL-E in a theatre and I'll gladly see it again in a theatre if anyone I know wants someone to go with them to see it. It's possible that this will end up being my favorite Pixar movie, which is saying a lot.
It's amazing that a movie with so little dialogue (nothing is spoken for a LONG time and once there is speaking, there is very little until near the end) can be so captivating and engaging. If you would have told me that the relationship between two robots (one which reminds me a lot of the robots in Star Tours at Disneyland and Short Circuit) could involve me enough to where I'd get a bit teary at one point, I would have thought you were nuts. WALL-E is such a great story that I was completely involved in the outcome throughout the movie.
Everyone coming out of the movie (young and old) seemed to love it. I can't remember seeing such a wide range of people who loved an animated movie (even one by Pixar) - ever. WALL-E is wonderful and I can't recommend it enough!

Perhaps this movie was too dark for me. Or maybe I just wasn't in the right mood to watch it, but I don't think the movie got interesting until the last 5 minutes or so (and David never got to the point where he thought it started).
I know everyone else seems to love this movie, but I thought it was horrible. I'm still not sure why I bothered to finish watching it, other than the fact that it was good to work on my Spanish by not reading the subtitles.

I have to admit that in spite of the cast, I had very low expectations for My Super Ex-Girlfriend. It's far from the best comedy I've seen, but I enjoyed the movie a lot more than I expected. Parts of My Super Ex-Girlfriend were beyond absurd and it went a little too far, but the idea of having a super ex who is really unhinged and upset with you is funny and they did a good job with the idea.
Definitely glad I didn't bother to see this in a theatre, but it's worth the rental.

I never know what to expect when they make a cartoon/toy into a movie. Some of those have been pretty bad, so I didn't expect much. I'm very happy with what they did with the Transformers movie. The special effects were very well done and the story was even okay. I figured the movie would be all about the special effects, but it was well done.
If you get a chance, catch Transformers on the big screen, since the special effects are definitely better if you see them on a huge screen.

From what I had heard, I expected The Fountain to be more like What Dreams May Come. Parts of The Fountain were a bit too out there for me, but after the beginning, when the tie-in to real life became clear, I really enjoyed the movie. Most of the Sci-Fi parts of the movie were too bizarre for David, but he still thought the movie was okay.
I think if you like Sci-Fi, you'll really enjoy this movie. If you don't like Sci-Fi that's pretty out there, I still think you'll enjoy the main story and appreciate the tie-in to the Sci-Fi portions of the movie. The Fountain was very well done. The special effects are very well done, the story is wonderful, the cast is amazing... I definitely recommend renging The Fountain if you missed it in theatres.

Since I don't pay very close attention to previews or read about movies before seeing them, I didn't realize that Deja Vu was so much of a sci-fi movie. I thought it was just action. The sci-fi twist worked very well and made the movie much more entertaining than it would have been without that angle.
If you missed Deja Vu in theatres, I definitely recommend renting this entertaining sci-fi action movie with a bit of romance thrown in. Unlike many movies of its kind, Deja Vu does not concentrate on the love story. It's a good action movie with a sci-fi spin.

I liked Spider-Man 2 better than Spider-Man, so I had high hopes for Spider-Man 3 - especially since I always liked Venom. I wasn't disappointed. The special effects were wonderful and the story was great.
I never read the comic books, so I don't know if they stayed in line with that and don't remember Sandman from the cartoon, but they did a great job with the Venom part of the story line. They also did a great job with the Spider-Man/New Goblin, Peter Parker/Harry Osborn dynamics. Having the competition between Eddie Brock and Peter Parker playing off of the Venom & Spider-Man fights was a nice touch. I don't remember much about Eddie Brock from the cartoon, probably because Venom is so much cooler, but in the movie it was a very interesting part of the story.
Definitely catch this one in IMAX if you can, since the special effects are worth seeing on the largest screen possible and in the best quality.

This movie was interesting, but seemed to leave gaps in the story a bit too much. The acting is wonderful, the costumes and sets are great, but at times the story meanders along with no clear purpose.
Children of Men takes place in 2027 in a world where humans can no longer reproduce. Most of the movie centers around the one pregnant woman trying to get to the "Human Project," which many think is only a myth. The concept was definitely interesting, though the opinions of those trying to stop Kee's plans to get to the "Human Project" weren't thoroughly explained.
This dark movie is hardly a thriller (which is where Netflix classified it), but it is an interesting drama set in a dark not-so-distant future. It's definitely worth renting if you missed it in a theatre.

Since I only saw this movie in the IMAX 3D version, so I can't comment on the regular screen versions, but seeing it from the ideal location (center of the row and not too far up) for an IMAX theatre, this movie was incredible!
I wasn't sure how to feel about a new Superman movie. The originals were favorites of mine when I was younger and I wasn't sure I was ready for them to replace Christopher Reeve or Gene Hackman.
That being said, I think this cast was amazing! The addition of Kitty Kowalski (brilliantly portrayed by Parker Posey) really pushed this movie over the top to greatness - she was the perfect comic relief! I'm surprised that Tristan Lake Leabu who played Jason White (Lois's son) has never done anything before. I think we'll see him in a lot more. He was very good!
It was nice to see that during his time away Superman really improved his costume. The material is much better now and the look is definitely far superior to the original. You can tell Louise Mingenbach took a lot of time figuring out what to do for this costume. Very well chosen design.
Of course, it will always amaze me that Superman has such a horrible cover. I wear one contact most of the time, but sometimes I wear glasses. When I do, everyone still recognizes me. Occasionally, I get the "You wear glasses?" question, but I've never had anyone ask who I am if they already know me. *sigh* But, that isn't something those who created this movie, or the original, are responsible for, so I can't knock the movie for it.
I was glad to see a couple people seem to be starting to figure out that Clark Kent just MIGHT be Superman... Perhaps someday they'll put two and two together.
I highly recommend getting to an IMAX theatre to see Superman Returns if you can, even though only 4 scenes are in 3D (which I didn't realize until we got into the theatre - I guess that's the down side of not watching TV ads or listening to the radio much). The entire movie is in IMAX and seeing Superman Returns that was is definitely the best way to go. Of course, it wasn't filmed in IMAX (which they don't tell you till the movie is starting either), but it was still amazing. Heck, I even thought seeing a non-IMAX movie on that giant screen was worth it when they've done that in the past, so I would highly recommend it even if the IMAX company wasn't involved. The quality is definitely better with IMAX, though - you can't deny that.
I'm sure Superman Returns will be in theatres for a while, but definitely make sure you catch it while it is! This is one where the special effects really make seeing it on the big screen a must!

If you haven't seen the movie and don't want any spoilers, stop reading now.
It bothered me a bit that Superman's son was such a weak child (on an inhaler and countless other medications). But, then I thought about it a bit.... and I figured that a couple options are possible and both of them work enough for me to be okay with it.
1. He could take a while to grow into his powers. And, perhaps didn't get enough sun when he was younger to be fully healthy, since a son of Clark's would get extra energy from the sun.
2. He could be over-medicated because the doctors don't understand him. If you think about how quickly doctors toss medications at kids (look at all the kids on ADD, many of whom are probably just too advanced for their teachers or need to be moved into the next grade), and adults for that matter. I'm not saying all doctors do this, but I definitely think our society as a whole is pretty over-medicated. Since doctors probably wouldn't understand any of Jason's blood work, they would be likely to think he needed medications. And those might have even made him weaker to some extent.
I know, I over-analyze some things in movies too much. I thought the movie was wonderful!
