Deja Vu (2006)

Cast: Denzel Washington (Doug Carlin), Paula Patton (Claire Kuchever), Val Kilmer (Agent Pryzwarra), James Caviezel (Carroll Oerstadt)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Deja Vu page.

Since I don't pay very close attention to previews or read about movies before seeing them, I didn't realize that Deja Vu was so much of a sci-fi movie. I thought it was just action. The sci-fi twist worked very well and made the movie much more entertaining than it would have been without that angle.

If you missed Deja Vu in theatres, I definitely recommend renting this entertaining sci-fi action movie with a bit of romance thrown in. Unlike many movies of its kind, Deja Vu does not concentrate on the love story. It's a good action movie with a sci-fi spin.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Harry Lockhart), Val Kilmer (Gay Perry), Michelle Monaghan (Harmony Faith Lane), Corbin Bernsen (Harlan Dexter)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang page.

I'm not sure what I expected of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang exactly, but I guess I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. This is a very entertaining movie. Harry's narrating and commenting on the events that happen (typical movie ploys, plot devices, etc.) was hilarious! It's nice to see a movie that's different. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's very entertaining!

The cast is wonderful, the script is hilarious, and the overall package is fun to watch. It was unusual and fresh. Any movie that starts out by a thief getting out of a tight spot by auditioning for a movie where the character is going through what he just went through in real life, it's going to be a great ride and that's how this one starts.

I definitely recommend renting Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!

Stateside (2004)

Cast: Rachael Leigh Cook (Dori Lawrenece), Jonathan Tucker (Mark Deloach), Agnes Bruckner (Sue "of the Dubervilles" Dubois), Val Kilmer (Staff Sergeant Skeer)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Stateside page.

Seeing Stateside in a free preview was cool, since we'd seen no marketing for it at all. I've liked Rachael Leigh Cook in everything I've seen her in, so as soon as I heard her name, I said we were interested (which I almlost always am for a free preview - I love movies). Dori is based on a real actress, which makes things a bit more interesting.

They show a patient with schizophrenia (Dori) fairly accurately, which is a nice change from the crazy & dangerous view normally presented in film. It was nice to see a more realistic portrayal of someone with a mental illness trying to live her life and love.

I definitely recommend renting this if you missed its short theatrical release.

Batman Forever (1995)

Cast: Val Kilmer (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Tommy Lee Jones (Two-Face/Harvey Dent), Jim Carrey (Riddler/Edward Nygma), Nicole Kidman (Dr. Chase Meridian), Chris O'Donnell (Robin/Dick Grayson), Michael Gough (Alfred Pennyworth)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Batman Forever page.

I loved Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne, but I thought there could have been someone better for Batman himself. In spite of my disappointment in Batman Forever, I do think that Val Kilmer was a better Batman. The down side of the new lead is that he didn't make a very convincing Bruce Wayne.

How is it possible for such an amazing cast to make such a horrible Batman movie? I think the casting was the main thing Joel Schumacher did wrong (other than not leaving it as dark as Tim Burton's Gotham). I'm not saying that he didn't pick an amazing cast, but just that there were too many of them. He introduced too many villains at once and brought Robin (never a character I liked) into the picture, too. I don't think a single movie can handle all of that and still have a coherent story. So, there wasn't really much of a story...

Here's hoping that Tim Burton gets the reigns back for the next movie!
