Iron Man (2008)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Terrence Howard (Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes)), Jeff Bridges (Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts)
For complete information, see IMDb's Iron Man page.

Perhaps it was all the hype. Perhaps it was the parts of the previews I saw.... Whatever it was that raised my hopes, I expected more from Iron Man. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie and I'm glad that I rented it and that I own a great TV. However, I wasn't super impressed. I thought The Dark Knight was quite a bit better and have enjoyed quite a few movies based on characters from the comics more than I liked Iron Man.

The cast is amazing and the story is okay, but not stellar. The costume is good and perhaps if I had seen Iron Man in a movie theatre I would have been more impressed. Worth renting, but not close to my favorite movie of 2008.

Zodiac (2007)

Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal (Robert Graysmith), Mark Ruffalo (Inspector David Toschi), Anthony Edwards (Inspector William Armstrong), Robert Downey Jr. (Paul Avery)
For complete info, see IMDb's Zodiac page.

I haven't read the books or seen any of the other movies about the zodiac killer, but unsolved mysteries always intrigue me. The cast of Zodiac is amazing. If I was still seeing a lot of movies in theatres, this would have definitely been on my list, but I prefer to rent them most of the time now.

They describe Zodiac as a thriller, but I’m not sure I agree with that. Perhaps a very mild thriller. It wasn’t exactly scary, as most thrillers are, but it was an interesting crime drama with a the added bonus of being an unsolved mystery. Since no one really knows for sure what happened, it made the movie more interesting.

I definitely recommend renting Zodiac. It’s a very well done suspenseful movie.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Harry Lockhart), Val Kilmer (Gay Perry), Michelle Monaghan (Harmony Faith Lane), Corbin Bernsen (Harlan Dexter)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang page.

I'm not sure what I expected of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang exactly, but I guess I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. This is a very entertaining movie. Harry's narrating and commenting on the events that happen (typical movie ploys, plot devices, etc.) was hilarious! It's nice to see a movie that's different. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's very entertaining!

The cast is wonderful, the script is hilarious, and the overall package is fun to watch. It was unusual and fresh. Any movie that starts out by a thief getting out of a tight spot by auditioning for a movie where the character is going through what he just went through in real life, it's going to be a great ride and that's how this one starts.

I definitely recommend renting Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!

Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005)

Cast: David Strathairn (Edward R. Murrow), Robert Downey Jr. (Joe Wershba), Patricia Clarkson (Shirley Wershba), Jeff Daniels (Sig Mickelson), George Clooney (Fred Friendly)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Good Night, and Good Luck. page.

Perhaps I expected more from Good Night, and Good Luck., since it was nominated for best picture. Maybe if I'd seen it before I knew that, I would have been more impressed. Since I didn't, I only have my perceptions from after the nomination and I wasn't really that impressed. It was a good movie, but not one of my favorite 5 that I've seen from 2005 and I haven't seen Capote or Munich yet. I think Match Point was a much better movie. But, they never ask me...

I'd say Good Night, and Good Luck. is worth renting, but I'm glad I didn't bother to see it in a movie theater.
