Penelope (2008)

Cast: Christina Ricci (Penelope), James McAvoy (Max), Catherine O'Hara (Jessica Wilhern), Reese Witherspoon (Annie)
For complete information, see IMDb's Penelope page.
This movie was much better than I expected, since they threw in a couple twists to the standard girl in distress needs a man to save her plot that seemed to be the basis of Penelope from the little I had seen about it. I won't give anything away for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but the story is much better and more of a girl power movie than a movie about a maiden in distress who needs to be saved by her prince.
Great cast and well done make-up and costumes. If you didn't see this in a theatre, it's definitely worth renting.

Walk the Line (2005)

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny Cash), Reese Witherspoon (June Carter)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Walk the Line page.
I was surprised that I really enjoyed this movie. I wanted to see it because of the amazing cast, but was wary, since in general I can't stand Country music. I didn't expect to enjoy the scenes with Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon singing, but they were so funny that I enjoyed them. I think this is a great story about a man I knew very little about.
My sister is now in love with Joaquin Phoenix because of this movie. I don't quite get that, though I've always thought he was a great actor and he and Reese Witherspoon prove their acting talent again in this movie.
Even if you're not a fan of Country music, you should consider seeing this movie. It was very well done!

Just Like Heaven (2005)

Cast: Reese Witherspoon (Elizabeth Masterson), Mark Ruffalo (David Abbott), Donal Logue (Jack Houriskey), Dina Spybey (Abby Brody)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Just Like Heaven page.
Just Like Heaven is a cute romantic comedy, but nothing earth-shattering. I was a little disappointed, since Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo are some of my favorite actors. The script didn't really measure up to their talent, but it was still very cute and endearing. As long as you're just looking for a light romantic comedy, this is a good rental. Definitely worth watching if you love romantic comedies as long as you don't expect it to be at the top of your list of favorites at the end.

Vanity Fair (2004)

Cast: Reese Witherspoon (Becky Sharp), Romola Garai (Amelia Sedley), Gabriel Byrne (The Marquess of Steyne), Angelica Mandy (Young Becky)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Vanity Fair page.
I know that many disagree with me, but I thought they did a good job with the Vanity Fair movie. Reese Witherspoon is wonderful, as always, and the rest of the cast was very good, too. I love a good period piece and I think Vanity Fair is one about a woman who manages to claw her way up the social ladder.
Definitely not for everyone, as the reviews have shown, but if you like period pieces, I think this is a good movie to rent.

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003)

Cast: Reese Witherspoon (Elle Woods), Sally Field (Rep. Victoria Rudd), Regina King (Grace Rossiter)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde page.
Of course, the second movie wasn't nearly as good as the original Legally Blonde, but it was exactly what I expected. It was a very fun summer movie. As long as you go into this movie realizing it's nothing but pure fun, I think it's a great idea.
I'd see Reese Witherspoon in anything and I think Elle Woods is a wonderful character. I was glad to see them do a sequel.

Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Cast: Reese Witherspoon (Melanie Smooter/Carmichael), Josh Lucas (Jake Perry), Patrick Dempsey (Andrew Hennings)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Sweet Home Alabama page.
Another really cute Reese Witherspoon movie. The cast is great and the story is really cute and heart-warming. If you like romantic comedies, this is the movie for you. It's got it all.
Reese Witherspoon actually plays someone from the south in Sweet Home Alabama and it's fun watching her in a movie with her original southern accent.

The Importance of Being Earnest (2002)

Cast: Rupert Everett (Algy), Colin Firth (Jack), Fances O'Connor (Gwendolen), Reese Witherspoon (Cecily), Judi Dench (Lady Bracknell)
For complete info, see IMDb's The Importance of Being Earnest page.
Although I like Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, I went into this movie with an open mind and was rewarded for doing so. I could tell from the titles of the reviews that most people were not happy with the latest version of this story, but I love the cast and I wanted to see for myself. I was happy with the movie. I love the story and have seen the play and still enjoy this movie. I recommend it, whether you've seen other versions of play, other movies, etc. or not. I think you can enjoy it either way as long as you don't go into the experience assuming it will be exactly like the last time you saw the play live or the last movie. Enjoy it for their interpretation of the classic.

Cast: Reese Witherspoon (Elle Woods), Luke Wilson (Emmett Richmond), Selma Blair (Vivian Kensington)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Legally Blonde page.
I'm a big believer of not judging a book by its cover, so Legally Blonde caught my eye immediately. I'd seen Reese Witherspoon in some movies, but I truly became a fan within the first few minutes of Legally Blonde.
I can't recommend this movie highly enough. It has a great cast and wonderful messages about not pre-judging people based on looks.

Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Kathryn Merteuil), Ryan Phillippe (Sebastian Valmont), Reese Witherspoon (Annette Hargrove), Selma Blair (Cecile Caldwell)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Cruel Intentions page.
It's a shame this movie was only advertised as a teen flick. Had the ads (and perhaps the title) been different, I think it would appeal to a wider audience. It was great to see an updated version of Dangerous Liaisons for a younger generation. I've always liked re-made classics and this one is done with a fresh view.

Pleasantville (1998)

Cast: Tobey Maguire (David), Reese Witherspoon (Jennifer), William H. Macy (George Parker), Joan Allen (Betty Parker), Jeff Daniels (Mr. Johnson)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Pleasantville page.
Initially, I thought the idea of Pleasantville, where two teenagers get trapped inside a 50's sitcom, which is the boy's favorite TV show, was a great idea. I had no idea how wonderful the movie would be, though.
Pleasantville is an amazing movie about living life to the fullest and experiencing all parts of life. A lot of people I know who saw this thought it was too centered on sex and didn't like it, but I disagree. Not everyone in Pleasantville turns to color for the same reasons. Some turn because of experiencing the joys of reading. Some, due to anger. Pleasantville explores the world without variation, where everything is seemingly perfect and pleasant. It shows us why the seemingly perfect or pleasant life is unfulfilling and why those there won't thrive in their one-dimensional view of the world. The special effects are also very well done.
I highly recommend this movie!
