P. S. I Love You (2007)

Cast: Hilary Swank (Holly Kennedy), Gerard Butler (Gerry Kennedy), Lisa Kudrow (Denise Hennessey), Gina Gershon (Sharon McCarthy), James Marsters (John McCarthy), Kathy Bates (Patricia Rawley), Harry Connick Jr. (Daniel Connelly)
For complete info on this amazing cast, see IMDb's P. S. I Love You page.

This movie about a young woman who loses her husband to cancer and the messages he left her to help her get through the pain of his death is very well done. The cast is completely amazing (it was great to see Sherie Rene Scott as the travel agent, too). The scenery in Ireland was beautiful and fit very well in this touching movie. It would have been worth seeing on a big screen for some of the shots of the countryside. Of course, there are no special effects, so it's a very good movie to rent.

If you don't like fairly sappy love stories, P. S. I Love You is not for you. That should be clear from the title. P. S. I Love You is a very well done romantic movie and I highly recommend it if you do enjoy romantic dramas.

Freedom Writers (2007)

Cast: Hilary Swank (Erin Gruwell), Patrick Dempsey (Scott Casey), Scott Glenn (Steve), Imelda Staunton (Margaret Campbell), April L. Hernandez (Eva)
For complete info, see IMDb's Freedom Writers page.

This movie, based on the book of the true story, is very moving and well done. It's not completely unique, since other teachers have reached out to those everyone thought didn't deserve their time and there have been movies made about some of these teachers. However, the way Freedom Writers was told through the eyes of the students and the way all of their stories were incorporated into the movie was a bit different than the average movie about a teacher taking a bunch of kids no one thought were worth anything and caring enough to make a difference.

Erin Gruwell started an amazing program and the kids who are graduating are a testament to that system. This movie is a good tribute to the real Freedom Writers and is definitely worth renting if you missed it in theatres.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Cast: Clint Eastwood (Frankie Dunn), Hilary Swank (Maggie Fitzgerald), Morgan Freeman (Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Million Dollar Baby page.

As someone who hates boxing, I wasn't looking forward to seeing Million Dollar Baby in spite of the great previews and everyone saying it's a great movie. Surprisingly enough, Clint Eastwood directed Million Dollar Baby in such a way that I absolutely loved it, in spite of the boxing. Heck, he got me to care about boxing for a couple hours, which is a minor miracle.

The cast and directing is absolutely amazing. The story is moving. What more can you ask for in a movie? I haven't seen all the nominees, but so far this has my vote for best picture.
