The Ugly Truth (2009)

Cast: Katherine Heigl (Abby), Gerard Butler (Mike), Bree Turner (Joy), Eric Winter (Colin)
For complete info, see IMDb's The Ugly Truth page.
I had this on my rental list and it's where I suggest you put The Ugly Truth. It's definitely worth seeing and is a lot funnier than I thought it would be based on the premise and the one ad I'd seen for it.
For the most part, The Ugly Truth is your typical romantic comedy. The story is predictable, but it's a cute movie and though it's far from great I don't understand why the reviews have been so horrible. Is it a great film? Nope. Will it win any awards? Definitely not. Was it amusing throughout and hilarious at times? Yup. So, by my standards, it's worth renting or (as in my case) seeing with a friend just for fun. It was my friend's choice, but I really enjoyed the movie. As long as you go to the movie or rent the movie knowing that you're going to see a typical romantic comedy and that's what you're in the mood for, The Ugly Truth will entertain you for a bit.

P. S. I Love You (2007)

Cast: Hilary Swank (Holly Kennedy), Gerard Butler (Gerry Kennedy), Lisa Kudrow (Denise Hennessey), Gina Gershon (Sharon McCarthy), James Marsters (John McCarthy), Kathy Bates (Patricia Rawley), Harry Connick Jr. (Daniel Connelly)
For complete info on this amazing cast, see IMDb's P. S. I Love You page.
This movie about a young woman who loses her husband to cancer and the messages he left her to help her get through the pain of his death is very well done. The cast is completely amazing (it was great to see Sherie Rene Scott as the travel agent, too). The scenery in Ireland was beautiful and fit very well in this touching movie. It would have been worth seeing on a big screen for some of the shots of the countryside. Of course, there are no special effects, so it's a very good movie to rent.
If you don't like fairly sappy love stories, P. S. I Love You is not for you. That should be clear from the title. P. S. I Love You is a very well done romantic movie and I highly recommend it if you do enjoy romantic dramas.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

Cast: Gerard Butler (The Phantom), Emmy Rossum (Christine), Patrick Wilson (Raoul)
For complete cast info, see The Phantom of the Opera page.
As someone who loved the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in high school, I was very excited to hear that the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera was finally happening.
Fortunately, I was not disappointed by this version. I was confused by the moving of the crash of the chandelier, but I guess they did it to make the end of the movie seem more dramatic. I was bummed that some of my favorite interludes are now spoken, but I anticipated this in the move to screen and it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would.
Emmy Rossum does an amazing job as Christine. Her opera background was very apparent. On a whole, I'm just so happy to see movie musicals coming back as a genre. I hope this trend continues.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)

Cast: Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft), Gerard Butler (Terry Sheridan), Noah Taylor (Bryce), Ciaran Hinds (Jonathan Reiss), Chris Barrie (Hillary)
For complete info, see IMDb's Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life page.
I liked the idea that this time Lara Croft was on a quest to save Pandora's box. That treasure seemed like one that would lead to a really great. I really enjoyed this sequel. Like all movie fans, sequels make me a bit wary, since some of them have been so horrible. But, then there are the amazing ones (like Terminator 2). I think I actually enjoyed this Lara Croft movie a bit more than the first. Perhaps because they didn't need as much exposition in setting up her character.
I'd definitely recommend Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life to anyone who enjoyed the first movie, likes the game, or likes action movies with super-hero type stars.
