City Slickers (1991)

Cast: Billy Crystal (Mitch Robbins), Daniel Stern (Phil Berquist), Bruno Kirby (Ed Furillo), Patricia Wettig (Barbara Robbins)
For complete info, see IMDb's City Slickers page.
I tend not to go for cowboy/western movies, which is probably part of why I like City Slickers so much. It seems to be made as much for people like me, who aren't that into the western genre, as it is for those who love it.
With Billy Crystal's comedy and the rest of the great cast, I thought this was very enjoyable. Very funny throughout and a lot of interesting characters to hold your attention.

Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)

Cast: Kathy Bates (Evelyn Couch), Mary Stuart Masterson (Idgie Threadgoode), Mary-Louise Parker (Ruth Jamison), Jessica Tandy (Ninny Threadgoode)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Fried Green Tomatoes page.
From the title and desrcription of this movie (about a housewife who's unhappy with her life and befriends an old lady in a nursing home), it doesn't sound all that interesting. However, the women in the cast make Fried Green Tomatoes a very interesting and entertaining movie. I didn't read the novel, so I can't tell you how it compares, but I enjoyed the movie greatly and definitely recommend you check out this amazing cast in a good movie.

The Last Boy Scout (1991)

Cast: Bruce Willis (Joseph Cornelius 'Joe' Hallenbeck), Damon Wayans (James Alexander 'Jimmy/Jim' Dix), Chelsea Field (Sarah Hallenbeck)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's The Last Boy Scout page.
A detective and an ex-quarterback working together to solve a murder? Why not? If you want action, The Last Boy Scout has got it! As with most action movies, there isn't much to the story, but the action is wonderful and I definitely recommend seeing this one. If you like Bruce Willis in movies like Die Hard (and I don't know many people who don't), this is the kind of movie for you! If not, then it's probably best that you skip this one.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Cast: Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White, Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers, Angela Lansbury
For complete info, see IMDb's Beauty and the Beast page.
There's definitely a reason this is the first Disney film nominated for the best picture Oscar. I've enjoyed many versions of this story and think that Disney's version of Beauty and the Beast is enchanting. The music (by Alan Menken & Howard Ashman) is wonderful! I love that Disney has a strong female character in this movie, too! Belle is head-strong, intelligent, and is not dancing around looking for a prince (or any man, for that matter) to sweep her off her feet. She goes on a dangerous journey to rescue her father and manages to find love accidentally. It's sweet and a great story about paying attention to what's inside, not the outside appearances.
Great message, wonderful cast, very well done story and animation... a delight!

Doc Hollywood (1991)

Cast: Michael J. Fox (Dr. Benjamin Stone), Julie Warner (Vialula/'Lou'), Bernard Hughes (Dr. Aurelius Hogue), Woody Harrelson (Hank Gordon)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Doc Hollywood page.
Basic story about a city guy who gets "trapped" in a small town, learns to love it, and finds someone to love. This story about a young doctor who causes a traffic accident in a small town and has to work in their "hospital" to make up for the damage done is cute, even though it's not original. I've always enjoyed watching Michael J. Fox on screen and Doc Hollywood is no exception. It's nothing special, but worth catching when it comes on at home or if you're renting.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

Cast: Kevin Costner (Robin of Locksley), Morgan Freeman (Azeem), Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Marian Dubois), Christian Slater (Will Scarlett), Alan Rickman (Sheriff of Nottingham)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves page.
I've always liked the story of a man who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor and although it's definitely overly romantic and a bit too sappy, this is my favorite telling of the story so far. I've never been a Kevin Costner fan, but I enjoy this movie in spite of him. The costumes, sets, music, story, cast, etc. are wonderful and the fantasy is fully realized in this romantic drama with some great comic moments thrown in for good measure.
Robin Hood and his Maid Marian have been one of my favorite love stories and this telling of the story really captures the love and romance along with the adventure of getting there.

City of Angels, Broadway (1991)

Cast: Tom Wopat (Stone), Michael Rupert (Stine), Susan Terry (Oolie), Kay McClelland (Gabby), Richard Kline (Buddy Fidler & Irwin S. Irving), and a wonderful cast
The beginning of this show, which I won't spoil for those of you who haven't seen it, really caught me off guard and is so well done. The story, music, and lyrics of City of Angels are all very strong. It's a great story of an author whose writing normally mirrors his life and whose book gets picked up to be a Hollywood movie. It's very entertaining and a lot of fun with, of course, your great happy Hollywood ending.
Tom Wopat has a great singing voice, which I didn't realize before this show. The rest of the cast was also very good.

The Secret Garden, Original Broadway Cast (1991)

Cast: Rebecca Luker (Lily), Daisy Eagan (Mary Lennox), Mandy Patinkin (Archibald Craven), Robert Westenberg (Dr. Neville Craven)
For complete cast info, see IBDb's The Secret Garden page.
The cast of The Secret Garden was totally amazing. They assembled some of the best voices on Broadway and put them in this musical.
The music is good, though at times it seems a bit too repititious. I particularly love Wick, Lily's Eyes and If I had a Fine White Horse. The childrens' chanting is also very well done.
The giant sculptures in the garden are a bit much, and very ugly. Perhaps that was how they were intended to come across, since the garden is initially a scary place for Mary, but it was still a bit over the top.
I've always enjoyed the story of The Secret Garden and I think Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon did a good job of getting it across in a new medium.

The Phantom of the Opera, Pantages Theatre - Toronto (1991)

Cast: Colm Wilkinson (The Phantom of the Opera), Susan Cuthbert (Christine Daae, understudy), Gillian Saunders (Meg Giry, understudy), and many other talented cast members (including Neve Campbell in the Ballet Chorus)
It was a bit strange seeing a man I associate so strongly with Jean Valjean from Les Miserables as the Phantom. It took me a while to get used to it, but he did a wonderful job. It was also odd initially to be thinking that Meg was singing Christine's lines and visa versa. This is probably because of the understudies performing, but I had never seen even a picture of a blonde Christine or a Meg who wasn't blonde, so it just took me by surprise.
The cast was very good and the music and dancing were amazing. Not nearly as big of a fan of The Phantom of the Opera as I was when I first saw it, but it's still an enjoyable show.
Unfortunately, in the production we saw, the trap door didn't work, so the ending was messed up. Apparently, The Phantom of the Opera has at least a minor technical problem in almost every performance, due to the number of special effects. It was still sad for all my friends who hadn't seen the show before, though.
