The Guardian (2006)

Cast Kevin Costner (Ben Randall), Ashton Kutcher (Jake Fischer), Sela Ward (Helen Randall), Melissa Sagemiller (Emily Thomas)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's The Guardian page.

Don't let the fact that Kevin Costner's in this movie keep you away. We chose it mostly because of the timing after lunch and before our show, but this really was a very well done movie. I'm glad I saw it in a theatre, since the special effects were wonderful.

The cast is great. Even Kevin Costner's acting didn't bother me except for the scenes with Sela Ward, but the fact that Sela Ward was in those scenes saved every one of them for me. I love her! Ashton Kutcher again shows that he truly is a great actor in spite of having been in some crazy teen movies (like Just Married) and running Punk'd. He's a serious actor in spite of his silly roles and he's very good in The Guardian.

I definitely recommend seeing The Guardian in a theatre if you can get there. It just opened, so I'm sure it'll be around for a while.

Rumor Has It... (2005)

Cast: Jennifer Aniston (Sarah Huttinger), Kevin Costner (Beau Burroughs), Shirley MacLaine (Katharine Richelieu), Mark Ruffalo (Jeff Daly), Richard Jenkins (Earl Huttinger)
For complete info, see IMDb's Rumor Has It... page.

The funniest thing about this movie (for Melissa, David, and I, who saw it while Tom was working) was the drama in the theatre before the movie. There was a horrible woman who was mean to people who came in late by her definition (but quite a bit before the movie started). Names were thrown back and forth, people stormed out... More excitement than I'd seen in a movie theatre since A Knight's Tale caught on fire right before the climactic scene in the movie.

That being said, this movie where a woman learns that her family is the Robinsons from The Graduate is very entertaining. I think I got exactly what I expected from the movie. It was a light comedy with a great cast (even Kevin Costner didn't annoy me much). Sure, it was a bit over the top and sappy, but this family is supposed to be the family that The Graduate was based on - what would you expect from them?

Although this movie is probably not worth seeing in theatres, it is very entertaining and I'd recommend renting it.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

Cast: Kevin Costner (Robin of Locksley), Morgan Freeman (Azeem), Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Marian Dubois), Christian Slater (Will Scarlett), Alan Rickman (Sheriff of Nottingham)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves page.

I've always liked the story of a man who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor and although it's definitely overly romantic and a bit too sappy, this is my favorite telling of the story so far. I've never been a Kevin Costner fan, but I enjoy this movie in spite of him. The costumes, sets, music, story, cast, etc. are wonderful and the fantasy is fully realized in this romantic drama with some great comic moments thrown in for good measure.

Robin Hood and his Maid Marian have been one of my favorite love stories and this telling of the story really captures the love and romance along with the adventure of getting there.
