Sleepers (1996)

Cast: Kevin Bacon (Sean Nokes), Billy Crudup (Tommy Marcano), Robert De Niro (Father Bobby), Minnie Driver (Carol Martinez), Dustin Hoffman (Danny Snyder), Ron Eldard (John Reilly), Jason Patric (Lorenzo 'Shakes' Carcaterra), Brad Pitt (Michael Sullivan)
For complete info on this amazing cast, see IMDb's Sleepers page.

When a friend mentioned Sleepers to me, I was shocked that I'd never heard of it. I only listed the major characters above (and not even all of them) and look at that cast. How could I have possibly missed all information on this movie? Yes, it was just after I got out of college, I moved twice that year and got married, but that's no excuse for missing all information on Sleepers.

If you somehow managed to miss this movie, too, I highly recommend that you rent it. Definitely not an upbeat movie, but this story about boys who pull a prank that goes way too far, leading them to experience horrors in a detention center that scar them for life and the revenge they get 10 years later is very well done. The cast is beyond amazing. The story is gripping and heart wrenching. It's also never been proven either way, so it's possible the events in the movie actually happened. That possibility makes it much more horrific.

Return to Me (2000)

Cast: David Duchovny (Bob Rueland), Minnie Driver (Grace Briggs), Carroll O'Connor (Marty O'Reilly)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Return to Me page.

Return to Me is a heart-warming story, which still managed to make me cry from the sad parts in the beginning. Somehow, seeing a dog sad makes a story even more upsetting than it would be otherwise. Heart-wrenching!

Very cute and sweet romantic comedy. Things may work out a little too well, but hey, it's a romantic comedy!

Tarzan (1999)

Cast: Tony Goldwyn, Minnie Driver, Glenn Close, Brian Blessed
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Tarzan page.

Disney did a really good job with the story of Tarzan. I didn't read the books, but from what I read, I think Burroughs would be happy with what Disney did. The story is cute, the music is good, and the voice talents are wonderful!

Another animated love story with a happy ending, but that's why people love Disney animation - it's safe and dependable.

Good Will Hunting (1997)

Cast: Robin Williams (Sean Maguire), Matt Damon (Will Hunting), Ben Affleck (Chuckie Sullivan), Stellan Skarsgard (Prof. Gerald Lambeau), Minnie Driver (Skylar)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Good Will Hunting page.

Good Will Hunting is an amazing movie. Probably one of my favorites of all time. This movie about a brilliant janitor who sneaks around MIT completing impossible mathematic equations was very touching and real.

Some people have said that they found the swearing beyond excessive and totally unnecessary. Yes, there's a lot of swearing in Good Will Hunting. Is it over the top? Yes. Is it unnecessary? I don't think so. If you've ever gone to any inner city and listened to the language spoken, you'll find that swearing is very prevalent in normal conversations. I think the swearing in Good Will Hunting added to the feeling that the movie was about characters that are very real and allowed the audience to see what their lives were truly like.

Although I'm sure Titanic will get the best picture Oscar award, Good Will Hunting has my vote for best film of 1997.

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Cast: John Cusack (Martin Q. Blank), Minnie Driver (Debi Newberry), Alan Arkin (Dr. Oatman), Dan Aykroyd (Grocer), Joan Cusack (Marcella)
For complete info, see IMDb's Grosse Pointe Blank page.

A professional assassin's job collides with his ten-year high school reunion... I'm sure you can see what problems that might bring up for Martin. The cast is great, the action is well done, the soundtrack is wonderful, and it's hilrious. What more can one ask for?
