The Women (2008)

Cast: Meg Ryan (Mary Haines), Annette Bening (Sylvia Fowler), Eva Mendes (Crystal Allen), Debra Messing (Edie Cohen), Jada Pinkett Smith (Alex Fisher)
For complete list, see IMDb's The Women page.
The Women was a movie I was torn about watching. On one hand, it has a cast that is mostly full of amazing actresses. On the other hand, Meg Ryan is in it. To say I'm not a fan of Meg Ryan's is putting it mildly. I tend to try to avoid her in movies. The rest of the cast (Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing, etc.) are women I tend to like in movies.
Perhaps I enjoyed this movie, since part of me was expecting the worst. However, I thought the movie was well done and I enjoyed it. I'm glad I rented it and didn't bother to see it in a theatre, but I'd say that The Women is definitely worth renting. The relationships between the women could have been displayed a bit better, but the movie was well done overall.

American Beauty (1999)

Cast: Kevin Spacey (Lester Burnham), Annette Bening (Carolyn Burnham), Thora Birch (Jane Burnham), Wes Bentley (Ricky Fitts)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's American Beauty page.
Such an amazing movie, I don't know where to begin. Definitely Oscar-worthy!
The cast and story are wonderful and the direction and editing are superb. American Beauty is narrated by Lester, who tells us about how he decided to turn his miserable life around and ended up turning everyone else's life upside down in the process. A small-town guy with nothing to live for goes a little over the edge.

Mars Attacks! (1996)

Cast: Jack Nicholson (President James Dale/Art Land), Glenn Close (First Lady Marsha Dale), Annette Bening (Barbara Land), Pierce Brosnan (Professor Donald Kessler)
For rest of the amazing cast, see IMDb's Mars Attacks! page.
I know that this movie got trashed by reviewers and even some people I know, but I think it was exactly what the ads showed - a very stupid funny movie! I'm sure you have to be in the mood for a stupid funny movie to appreciate it, but I thought it was amusing. The cast might indicate a better movie than you get when you see Mars Attacks!, but I think if you saw the previews it lives up to them perfectly.
It's a ridiculous comedy and if you're in the mood for that it's pretty enjoyable. Not a bad idea for a rental.

The American President (1995)

Cast: Michael Douglas (President Andrew Shepherd), Annette Bening (Sydney Ellen Wade), Martin Sheen (A.J. MacInerney), Michael J. Fox (Lewis Rothschild)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's The American President page.
I can't explain why this is one of my favorite movies (perhaps my favorite - even a decade later), but something about The American President really made me laugh and touched my heart - two things I love in a movie.
The cast of The American President is absolutely amazing. There's not a single actor in this movie who isn't wonderful. As I watched it, I kept being surprised by everyone I saw in the movie. This movie is so quirky and funny and treats the the president like a normal guy, which you rarely see in movies. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to go through a campaign like this in real life, but I think The American President did a good job of showing what it might be like.
