The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

Cast: Sean Connery (Allan Quatermain), Naseeruddin Shah (Captain Nemo), Peta Wilson (Mina Harker), Tony Curran (Rodney Skinner (The Invisible Man))
For complete cast info, see IMDb's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen page.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen had a great cast and included some characters that I love. There was so much potential for a wonderful movie. The idea of all of these characters existing in an alternate world where they would all work together for a secret mission is wonderful.

Perhaps if the movie had been split up into two it could have worked better. As someone familiar with the characters in the movie, I was annoyed by the time taken to explain everything to me, the audience member. And I'm sure those unfamiliar with the characters were going nuts trying to figure out who everyone was, since some people weren't fully explained (which is probably why I found some things funny that seemed not to matter to many in the theater).

There are many continuity errors on top of the jumbled script. I think my favorite is when they all leave the top of the sub with a full set of table and chairs outside and go under almost immediately. Since it wasn't established that the table and chairs appear and disappear by some secret passage, these items should have been lost forever, but they're not.

I was very disappointed in this movie, but perhaps as a rental it could be enjoyed if you have low expectations, which most should now due to the horrible reviews it received. Sometimes, it's too bad that I don't pay attention to reviews. I really miss Gene Siskel! He was one of the only reviewers I almost never disagreed with. He wasn't too stuck up to appreciate a comedy that was just silly and fun, but he appreciated the artsy films I enjoy, too.

Finding Forrester (2000)

Cast: Sean Connery (William Forrester), Rob Brown (Jamal Wallace), Anna Paquin (Claire Spence)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Finding Forrester page.

This story of a gifted boy and his reclusive mentor is very well told. I highly recommend this touching story about finding someone you can trust in the strangest places. The friendship changes Jamal and William's lives forever and makes for a wonderful movie.

I highly recommend this great movie with a wonderful cast and fabulous screenplay. It's even better if you're a teacher or have had one of those amazing teachers who can change your life forever somewhere along the way.

Entrapment (1999)

Cast: Sean Connery (Robert MacDougal), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Virginia Baker), Ving Rhames (Aaron Thibadeaux)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Entrapment page.

I know this movie got trashed by critics, but I found it very entertaining. I think the cast did a very good job and that the story was solid. There were some good twists to make the plot a bit more interesting and fun to watch. The suspenseful scenes are broken up by comedy, making this a fun movie with some great comic moments. The end of Entrapment particularly impressed me. Though it wasn't a surprise, I think they pulled it off very well.

Definitely worth renting!
