Breaking and Entering (2006)

Cast: Jude Law (Will Francis), Juliette Binoche (Amira), Robin Wright Penn (Liv), Martin Freeman (Sandy)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Breaking and Entering page.

This was definitely an odd movie. Breaking and Entering is a movie about people struggling to hold it together. Whether it's a marriage that's falling apart or dealing with other problems in their lives.

The cast is amazing, but the plot left me wanting more. At the end of the movie, all I could think was that the movie had been strange. Parts of it are very good, but for portions of it I was wondering why I was bothering. I suppose it's because I never got fully invested in the characters. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this movie at the time, but I think it's one that can be skipped in spite of the amazing cast.

Chocolat (2000)

Cast: Juliette Binoche (Vianne Rocher), Johnny Depp (Roux), Victoire Thivisol (Vianne Rocher)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Chocolat page.

A woman and her daughter who shake up a small French village when they open up a chocolate shop. This mouth-watering movie is very well done. The cast is wonderful, the story is great, the soundtrack is beautiful, the scenery is gorgeous, and the chocolate is delectable. What more could one ask for in a romantic comedy/drama (other than, perhaps, that it not be released during Lent, as some of my Catholic friends have pointed out)?

I highly recommend this movie. It takes the idea of chocolate and romance being intertwined to the next level and is thoroughly enjoyable.

The English Patient (1996)

Cast: Ralph Fiennes (Count Laszlo de Almasy), Juliette Binoche (Hana), Willem Dafoe (David Caravaggio), Kristin Scott Thomas (Katharine Clifton)
For complete cast, see IMDb's The English Patient page.

A nurse tending a badly burned plane crash victim at the end of WWII as his past is shown in flashbacks, revealing his involvement in a love affair. I know this movie is only getting raves. And I enjoyed it, but at times it really dragged. At over 2 1/2 hours, there were some points that I thought could have been trimmed to make the story move a bit faster. Of course, when you're being taken care of and badly burned, all time seems to take an eternity, I'm sure. Perhaps that was part of what they wanted the audience to experience in the movie, but I would have enjoyed it more without that aspect. The love story was well done, though, and clearly the movie won a lot of awards, so it's well worth renting if you haven't seen it already.
