Purple Violets (2007)

Cast: Selma Blair (Patti Petalson), Patrick Wilson (Brian Callahan), Edward Burns (Michael Murphy), Debra Messing (Kate Scott)
For complete info, see IMDb's Purple Violets page.

I hadn't even heard of this movie when it came out in theatres, which surprised me considering the fact that I like almost everyone in the cast. Then, I read on IMDb that it was the first film to premiere on iTunes, so I guess that's why I hadn't heard of it.

Purple Violets deals with authors struggling to please their fans and come up with their next great novels while managing to handle their personal lives at the same time. If you enjoy Edward Burns, I definitely recommend renting this movie. The cast is great and the story kept me interested throughout the movie.

27 Dresses (2008)

Cast: Katherine Heigl (Jane Nichols), James Marsden (Kevin Doyle), Judy Greer (Casey), Malin Akerman (Tess Nichols), Edward Burns (George)
For complete info, see IMDb's 27 Dresses page.

I always thought the concept of 27 Dresses was a great one. I also thought that they had a great title for a movie about someone who was always a bridesmaid (or, in this case, always a maid of honor) and never a bride. In spite of thinking it was a cute concept, 27 Dresses pleasantly surprised me. I think this is one "chick flick" that even guys can enjoy.

The story behind 27 Dresses is clever and definitely puts a few unique spins on the standard romantic comedy. Besides, I think everyone can appreciate the fact that there have been some hideous bridesmaids dresses out there (whether they looked like they looked better at the time due to the fashion, or not). Most women have had to wear them, but everyone has been to at least one wedding where they've shuddered at the idea of the poor women having to walk down the aisle (and hang out through the entire reception) in one of those horrible dresses.

The cast is amazing and the dresses are over the top and wonderful! If you missed 27 Dresses in a theatre, I highly recommend renting it now.

The Holiday (2006)

Cast: Cameron Diaz (Amanda), Kate Winslet (Iris), Jude Law (Graham), Jack Black (Miles)
For complete info, see IMDb's The Holiday page.

Jack black in a movie that has so many serious moments? Who would have guessed? In spite of that choice (great for the comic moments, sometimes not believable in the serious parts), I really enjoyed The Holiday. I thought it was a very entertaining and sweet story.

This story about women who are running away from their personal and professional lives and who find love where they least expect it is well worth watching. I definitely recommend renting The Holiday if you missed it in theatres.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Cast: Tom Hanks (Captain John H. Miller), Tom Sizemore (Sergeant Mike Horvath), Edward Burns (Pvt. Richard Reiben)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Saving Private Ryan page.

Great cast, very well done special effects, but just not quite what I thought it could be. With such a great plot, Steven Spielberg directing, Tom Hanks and the rest of the amazing cast, I figured this was a shoe in for a movie that would sweep me away and have me hoping it got best picture. Turns out that neither of these happened. The movie was okay, but not nearly as good as I thought it could be. And, I hope it doesn't get best picture, even though these kinds of movies tend to impress the academy.

Everyone who went to the movie with me was more impressed by Saving Private Ryan than I, but they still couldn't talk me into liking it more than I did. The movie really dragged for me. At over 2 1/2 hours that does happen sometimes, but I've been to 3-hour movies that seemed to fly and this was definitely not one of them. Instead, I found myself checking my watch and wondering how much longer it could possibly go on.

I guess this just wasn't my kind of movie, since I know almost everyone else out there loved it. I could have waited to rent it, though I do like to have seen all the Oscar nominees by the time the awards come around, so that makes seeing it in a movie theatre a good idea.

She's the One (1996)

Cast: John Mahoney (Mr. Fitzpatrick), Edward Burns (Mickey Fitzpatrick), Mike McGlone (Francis Fitzpatrick), Jennifer Aniston (Renee Fitzpatrick), Maxine Bahns (Hope Fitzpatrick), Cameron Diaz (Heather Davis)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's She's the One page.

She's the One is not a typical romantic comedy. It's a bit darker than most and I liked that. It's not the standard girl who gets between two brothers type of movie. John Mahoney, Ed Burns, and the rest of the cast are amazing. If you missed this one, you should catch it as a rental. It's well worth the time invested.
