Last Chance Harvey (2008)

Cast: Dustin Hoffman (Harvey Shine), Emma Thompson (Kate Walker), Eileen Atkins (Maggie Walker), Kathy Baker (Jean), Liane Balaban (Susan)
For complete info, see IMDb's Last Chance Harvey page.

Dustin Hoffman & Emma Thompson are wonderful in this movie. It's a very touching story about a man whose life is falling apart until he finds someone who turns his life upside down. You definitely miss nothing by seeing this on the small screen, since it's all about the relationships. Traveling to London for a wedding from America is stressful any time, but when it's for your daughter's wedding and she seems closer to her step father, I think the trip would push almost anyone to the edge.

I definitely recommend renting Last Chance Harvey if you missed it in a theatre.

The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)

Cast: Maria Bello (Jocelyn), Emily Blunt (Prudie Drummond), Kathy Baker (Bernadette), Amy Brenneman (Sylvia Avila), Maggie Grace (Allegra Avila), Hugh Dancy (Grigg Harris), Jimmy Smits (Daniel Avila), Marc Blucas (Dean Drummond), Kevin Zegers (Trey)
For complete info, see IMDb's The Jane Austen Book Club page.

I can't remember why I added this book to my list, but it was probably a combination of the title (being about a Jane Austen book club when I read so much) and the amazing cast. The cast of The Jane Austen Book Club is amazing. I really wanted to list everyone in my blog, but that'd take so much space. I didn't realize that I'd pretty much recognize the entire cast (though I had to look some of them up on IMDb, I admit).

If you love to read, this is a must see movie! I think those who don't love to read or who aren't fans of Jane Austen can still enjoy this movie, but I'm sure it's a bit more of a "chick flick" because of the romantic undertones and the Jane Austen basis. Not that men can't enjoy Jane Austen's books, but I think women tend to be her bigger fans.

Any fan of reading or romantic movies should rent The Jane Austen Book Club. I really enjoyed this movie and I'm so glad I saw it. Definitely not a movie you had to see in a theatre, since there are no special effects. It's just a great story with an amazing cast!

Man from Nebraska, South Coast Repertory (2006)
Cast: Brian Kerwin (Ken Carpenter), Kathy Baker (Nancy Carpenter), Ben Livingston (Reverend Todd), Jane A. Johnston (Cammie Carpenter), Susannah Schulman (Ashley Kohl), Laura Niemi (Pat Monday), Susan Dalian (Tamyra), Julian Stone (Harry Brown), Hal Landon, Jr. (Bud Todd)

Man from Nebraska is a play about a man (Ken) who discovers that he no longer believes in God and needs to cope with what this means for his every day life. Somehow, in examining this, his pastor suggests he take a trip and he ends up in London for an extended vacation of sorts. The beginning moves a little slowly, but even those scenes were sometimes funny partly due to the lack of dialogue.

The cast is really great. Susan Dalian was particularly good as the bartender (Tamyra) in London.

I was surprised that they got the permission to use an instrumental version of Disney's "A Whole New World" in one of the scenes. They tend to be very selective in the use of their music.

For those of you who are General Hospital fans, you'd appreciate seeing Julian Stone (Jerry Jacks) live.
