Invincible (2006)

Cast: Mark Wahlberg (Vince Papale), Greg Kinnear (Dick Vermeil), Elizabeth Banks (Janet Cantrell)
For complete info, see IMDb's Invincible page.

This inspirational movie is based on the true story of Vince Papale. I hadn't heard of the story before the previews started for Invincible, but it's definitely got the perfect Disney ending. The fact that anyone could come in off the street having never even played football at a college level and make it into the NHL (and do well there) is unbelievable.

Invincible has got it all - sports, romance, the underdog winning... What more could one ask for in a movie? If I didn't know this had really happened, it'd seem like it was a bit too perfect - even for Disney. The fact that it's real makes the story so much more interesting.

If you like sports at all, this is a great movie. Even if you don't like sports, this is a movie that's well worth seeing. Like Cinderella Man and Million Dollar Baby, which made me think boxing was tolerable when I hate the sport in real-life, Invincible will probably appeal to people who hate football.

The cast is wonderful and Invincible is just an all-around feel-good movie. If you haven't seen it yet, add it to your rental list.

The Matador (2005)

Cast: Pierce Brosnan (Julian Noble), Greg Kinnear (Danny Wright), Hope Davis (Carolyn 'Bean' Wright)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's The Matador page.

I definitely didn't expect much from The Matador and I'm glad we didn't see it in theatres, but I do think it was worth renting. Perhaps I enjoyed it because I wasn't expecting it to be very good, but The Matador was a lot funnier than I anticipated and the cast showed that they shine even in a movie that's got a pretty thin plot.

This dark comedy has a great cast that works really well together. I think I rented it mostly because I like the cast and that's a good enough reason for this movie. If you like dark comedies or the cast, it's worth your time to watch it.

Stuck on You (2003)

Cast: Matt Damon (Bob) & Greg Kinnear (Walt)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Stuck on You page.

I definitely didn't have high hopes for this movie, but I have to say that it was better than I expected. Not a great movie, but worth recording from a movie channel on Tivo or renting. It was entertaining and that's really all one could expect from a movie with such a silly premise.

Someone Like You (2001)

Cast: Ashley Judd (Jane Goodale), Hugh Jackman (Eddie Alden), Greg Kinnear (Ray Brown), Marisa Tomei (Liz)
For complete info, see IMDb's Someone Like You page.

When Jane is unexpectedly dumped by her producer-boyfriend, she decides to figure out exactly what makes men do the things they do. When she writes an article on her findings, she becomes an overnight sensation and is idolized by single women everywhere.

Not a bad story to start. Could have been better executed, but having Hugh Jackman in the movie as Jane's roommate definitely increased the value of the movie for me. I'd say it's worth renting, but nothing special.

Nurse Betty (2000)

Cast: Morgan Freeman (Charlie), Renee Zellweger (Betty Sizemore), Greg Kinnear (Dr. David Ravell/George McCord), Chris Rock (Wesley)
For complete info, see IMDb's Nurse Betty page.

As someone who was raised on General Hospital and has always been fond of soaps, I thought the idea of this movie was priceless. I've heard so many stories about women believing that daytime characters are real and could really see someone going over the edge the way Betty does and taking it to the extreme. Betty goes through a terribly traumatic experience and goes off the deep end. Very entertaining.

There were definitely some problems with the script and it was a bit too dark at points, but I found it interesting. Chris Rock has always annoyed me, so that was probably the biggest down side of the movie for me.

Not the best movie, but if you've liked soap operas (or even if you think the idea of a woman believing they're real is funny), I think this is worth the rental.
