Phoebe in Wonderland (2009)

Cast: Elle Fanning (Phoebe Lichten), Felicity Huffman (Hillary Lichten), Patricia Clarkson (Miss Dodger), Bill Pullman (Peter Lichten)
For complete info see IMDb's Phoebe in Wonderland page.

I didn't know much about this movie other than the title and the cast before seeing it. I figured it was about a child fascinated by Alice in Wonderland who ends up getting the part of Alice in the school play. That's all definitely true, but it's only a small portion of the movie. Phoebe seems to suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder and perhaps Tourette's syndrom. The focus of the movie is on how Phoebe and her family cope with her disease and how being a part of the play may help Phoebe focus.

The movie is very well done and Elle Fanning has again shown that she's a great actor like her sister. Clearly, acting talent runs in the family.

If you missed it in theatres, I recommend renting Phoebe in Wonderland.

Babel (2006)

Cast: Brad Pitt (Richard), Cate Blanchett (Susan), Mohamed Akhzam (Anwar), Peter Wight (Tom), Harriet Walter (Lilly), Adriana Barraza (Amelia), Elle Fanning (Debbie), Nathan Gamble (Mike)
For complete info, see IMDb's Babel site.

I can definitely see why Babel is nominated for best picture. Since I've only seen two of the nominated films this year, I can't say whether it deserves to win best picture. I doubt that it will, since Crash won best picture last year. Crash handled the same difficult topic of prejudice, but did a much better job.

This is a very good movie where all the stories intertwine by the end of the movie. The cast is wonderful and the story is moving. I recommend renting Babel.

I Am Sam (2001)

Cast: Sean Penn (Sam Dawson), Michelle Pfeiffer (Rita Harrison), Dakota Fanning (Lucy Diamond Dawson)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's I Am Sam page.

I Am Sam is an incredibly touching story about a mentally retarded man (Sam) fighting for custody of his 7-year-old daughter (Lucy). The cast of this movie could not be better. I hadn't seen Dakota Fanning in anything before this movie, but I'm sure I'll see her in many movies to come. She is one of the most amazing child actors I've ever seen in a movie and from interviews on TV, she seems like a great person, so I'm sure good things will continue to happen in her career.

This movie is about more than just Sam's struggle. While he fights for his daughter, he ends up teaching his lawyer a lot about what is truly important in life. Wonderful messages in this movie. Heart-warming and wonderful!
