Alice in Wonderland: 3D (2010)

Cast: Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter), Helena Bonham Carter (Red Queen), Anne Hathaway (White Queen)
For complete info, see the IMDb Alice in Wonderland page.

I love Tim Burton, but perhaps I had heard too many good things about this Alice in Wonderland. I'm glad I didn't spend a ton of money to see it in IMAX 3D. Seeing it in 3D was nice and there are parts of the movie that are visually stunning, but it wasn't nearly as good as I expected from Tim Burton. Wonderland gave him so many opportunities to shine - perhaps I expect too much of Tim Burton at this point. I'm a huge fan of his work, so maybe I needed to look at the movie a bit differently.

I like what they did with the story and found it interesting. The cast was great, of course, and it's definitely worth seeing this Alice in Wonderland in 3D if you like 3D movies. If not, renting it would work, too.

Bride Wars (2009)

Cast: Anne Hathaway (Emma), Kate Hudson (Liv), Candice Bergen (Marion St. Claire)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Bride Wars page.

This movie is exactly what you'd expect from a romantic comedy with Anne Hathaway & Kate Hudson. It's a cute movie that's very funny and well done, but don't expect an amazing film you'll tell all your friends to rush out and see. It's entertaining and worth renting, but wasn't worth seeing in a theatre - I made a good call there. If you like romantic comedies, I'd suggest adding it to your list.

Rachel Getting Married (2008)

Cast: Anne Hathaway (Kym), Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel), Mather Zickel (Kieran)
For complete info, see IMDb's Rachel Getting Married page.

Anne Hathaway and the many nominations for Rachel Getting Married got my attention and I was glad I got it quickly from Netflix. It's definitely a dark movie, so you have to be in the mood for a bit of a rough ride, but Rachel Getting Married is very well done. The cast is amazing and the story is very well done and very realistic.

I highly recommend renting Rachel Getting Married. There's a reason it was nominated so many times.

Get Smart (2008)

Cast: Steve Carell (Maxwell Smart/Agent 86), Anne Hathaway (Agent 99), Dwayne Johnson (Agent 23), Alan Arkin (The Chief)
For complete info, see IMDb's Get Smart page.

I loved the TV show, so I was a little wary about the Get Smart movie. The fact that The Pink Panther was so horribly done made me even more cautious. I didn't get around to seeing Get Smart in a theatre, but it worked out really well. I got to watch it with my dad (who had introduced me to the Get Smart TV show). Both of us really enjoyed the movie. They did a very good job bringing this movie to the big screen. They kept the all the quirky aspects of Get Smart that I loved and I appreciate that. Steve Carell did a great job as Maxwell Smart - the whole cast was well chosen.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Cast: Meryl Streep (Miranda Priestly), Anne Hathaway (Andy Sachs), Emily Blunt (Emily), Stanley Tucci (Nigel), Adrian Grenier (Nate), Tracie Thoms (Lilly), Rich Sommer (Doug)
For complete info, see IMDb's The Devil Wears Prada page.

This definitely got me interested in reading the book, which initially didn't interest me too much, so that's saying something. The Devil Wears Prada offers an inside look at the world of fashion, which most of us will never see. Since most of us think it must be a glamorous world, seeing the truth behind it is pretty interesting, even for those of us who (like me) can't really understand the world or the draw of having one article of clothing worth thousands and thousands of dollars.

The cast is amazing. It was great to see Meryl Streep in this comedic role and the rest of the cast was wonderful, too. I think anyone who's worked behind the scenes in places that are perceived as glamorous or perfect by the outside world can relate a little bit to the idea of the reality being very different from the perception of the outside world. I've heard some horror stories of bosses that assistants have, but this movie definitely makes me appreciate even the worst of bosses I had in my past a bit more. None of them were that bad.

The Devil Wears Prada is a very enjoyable movie. The perfect holiday weekend movie where you can relax and enjoy yourself in the theatre! I highly recommend seeing it. It's a fun summer movie!

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Cast: Heath Ledger (Ennis Del Mar), Jake Gyllenhaal (Jack Twist), Michelle Williams (Alma Del Mar)
For complete cast list, see IMDb's Brokeback Mountain page.

Brokeback Mountain wasn't just a beautiful love story, it was cinematically beautiful, as well. Everyone knows about this movie as the "gay cowboy movie," but I think people need to look at it as a love story - pure and simple. I'm very happy that a movie that involves a gay love story is able to be in the top 10. For any movie to be at number 8 in the box office, when it's playing in only 483 movie theaters when number 9 (Rumor has It...) is in 2766 theaters and number 10 (The Family Stone) is in 2085 theaters. To me, that says a lot about the movie. I hope it continues to do well when it reaches wide release and that it gets a lot of the awards it is nominated for at the Golden Globe awards!

Stephen Sondheim's 75th: The Concert, Hollywood Bowl (2005)

Cast: Bernadette Peters, Audra McDonald, Vanessa Williams, Carol Burnett, Eric McCormack, Anne Hathaway, Angela Lansbury, Warren Beatty, Barbara Streisand
For a complete cast list, see the Hollywood Bowl Sonheim's 75th: The Concert page.

I'm so happy that they did a west coast concert for Stephen Sondheim's 75th birthday. It's amazing how good he looks! He hasn't really changed a bit. Sondheim has done so much in his career in musical theatre and some of my favorite musicals were written by him, so this show was very exciting for me.

Unfortunately, some people originally announced (Nathan Lane, Emmy Rossum, etc.) did not make it for whatever reason.

The cast was really amazing, with a couple minor exceptions.

Before the show started, I heard that Barbara Streisand was there. This really bothered me, since I figured she would sing and I can't stand hearing her sing. She's butchered so many wonderful songs and I didn't want to have to experience her destroying a Sondheim song when I was there in person.

Fortunately, the girl in front of me (whose boyfriend was in the choir that sang in the last number) said her boyfriend had told her that Barbara Streisand was supposed to sing "Children will Listen" and at the last minute she pulled a diva bit and decided not to sing it when they wouldn't make the change she demanded. THANK GOODNESS! I can't even imagine having to hear her sing that when ,Bernadette Peters (the original Witch in Into the Woods) was there. It would have broken my heart (and my ear drums)! Thank goodness Streisand is too much of a diva. Apparently, sometimes that comes in handy. I actually did a little "I didn't have to hear Barbara sing" dance and bounced up and down after she left the stage without singing. Yippee!

Carol Burnett messed up a few times while singing "Loveland/Getting Married Today," but that is such a fast song and her comedic ability just enhanced the performance. It really was wonderful. I don't know how Eric McCormack & Marin Mazzie managed to keep a straight faces - especially Marin Mazzie, since Carol Burnett was in her face making faces at her and trying to mess her up.

It was great to see so many wonderful stars performing Sondheim's work in one night. We had really good seats and I'm so glad we were able to catch this performance.

If you're interested in pictures from this performance, see the Broadway.com Photo page.

The Princess Diaries (2001)

Cast: Julie Andrews (Queen Clarisse Renaldi), Anne Hathaway (Mia Thermopolis), Hector Elizondo (Joe)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's The Princess Diaries page.

I have to admit that I was surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. Expecting a teenage flick that wouldn't be very interesting, since the plot seemed so thin, I saw this movie mostly for Julie Andrews. I was happy to find that this was really an endearing and very entertaining.

This movie isn't the same old teenage romantic comedy. It's clever and very funny. Plus, it has that good message for kids you normally find in a Disney movie. This one is that being true to yourself and living up to your potential (be all that you can be...) is very important. I think this is a lesson that everyone needs to learn and some people could use the reminder. Adults with and without kids can enjoy this movie.
