The Color Purple tour, Orange County Performing Arts Center (2008)

Cast: LaTonya Holmes (Celie), Rufus Bonds, Jr. (Mister), LaToya London (Nettie), Felicia P. Fields (Sofia), Angela Robinson (Shug Avery), Stu James (Harpo)
For complete info, see the The Color Purple musical site.

I had no desire to see this musical. The reasons for that were the fact that the official title is Oprah Winfrey Presents The Color Purple (I'm totally NOT a fan) and the fact that I really like the movie. I couldn't picture it as a musical and I wasn't sure they can do a good enough job.

Since The Color Purple was a part of my season tickets at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, I decided to check it out. I found that they really did a good job with the musical. I didn't buy the CD and I don't plan on doing so. I probably won't see the musical again, but the stayed true to the story (as far as I recall, it's been years since I've seen the movie) and the music is very good.

I saw the understudy for Celie, which was definitely disappointing, but (as usual) the understudy was amazing and I can't imagine the regular Celie doing any better. The cast is very good, so if you didn't see The Color Purple yet, you may want to think about seeing it on tour.
