Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

Cast: Keke Palmer (Akeelah), Laurence Fishburne (Dr. Larabee), Angela Bassett (Tanya Anderson), Curtis Armstrong (Mr. Welch)
For complete info, see IMDb's Akeelah and the Bee page.

This heartwarming tale about a young girl from south LA trying to represent her school (which she's not very fond of and skips frequently) and fight her way to the National Spelling Bee is beautifully done with a wonderful cast. The challenges Akeelah faces in her daily life and those of the other people in Akeelah's life come across very clearly on the screen.

Laurence Fishburne does a wonderful job as Dr. Larabee, who is facing his own demons as he tries to help Akeelah study for the spelling bee. Angela Bassett does a great job as Akeelah's over-worked mom who's trying to hold her family together and ensure that Akeelah has a bright future by making sure she stays in school. Akeelah also deals with the peer pressure around her and all the children at her school calling her names, since she's so smart. I think everyone can relate to what it's like to be different from your peers as a child.

Akeelah and the Bee is an inspirational movie and one that I would recommend to anyone.
