Since I wasn't a big fan of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway, I wasn't thrilled that it was the first show of our first season as subscribers of the Orange County Performing Arts Broadway series. However, I have to say that it was interesting seeing it from much closer to the stage and that the music wasn't as bad as I had remembered - just not that interesting.
Unfortunately, Norbert Leo Butz who originated the role of Freddy on Broadway and won a Tony award (& others) for the performance, wasn't in the show when we saw it. Timothy Gulan did a great job, but I wish David could have seen Norbert Leo Butz, since he wasn't with us when we saw Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway in December. Of course, I missed some of the original cast members, but the touring cast is really good.
I think that Hollis Resnik as Muriel & Drew McVety as Andre really stole the show. Muriel & Andre were great in the original Broadway cast (especially Joanna Gleason), but perhaps they were able to stand out more when the main stars of the cast weren't as powerful.
Tom Hewitt did a great job as Lawrence. I really loved him in Dracula, the musical and it was good to see him again. I still don't rate Dirty Rotten Scoundrels highly, but it's not a bad musical if it's going to be part of a series you already have. I wouldn't suggest going out of your way for it, but it's an okay show.
