Shear Madness, The Laguna Playhouse (2006)

Cast: Robin Long (Barbara DeMarco), Brett Ryback (Mikey Thomas), Joe Sampson (Tony Whitcomb), Kevin Symons (Eddie Lawrence), Chris Tarjan (Nick Rossetti & Director), Tracey Adams (Mrs. Shubert), Ed Arnold (Reporter's voice)

Shear Madness is pure fun and wonderful entertainment! I highly recommend it, so if you're in or around any of the cities where it's playing now (Check out the Shear Madness site to see if it gets close to you), I highly recommend it!

Most audience participation shows are completely entertaining, since the cast is almost always amazingly fast on their feet and really good at what they do. Shear Madness has a wonderful cast and was more up-to-date than any show I've ever seen. The additional writers of this show must never rest. They mentioned some things that hit the news only a couple days before we saw the show.

I also like that they make the show take place in the city the performance is taking place. They added a lot of local Orange County places and facts that definitely took a lot of time to research. Very impressive. There were so many jokes flying that I'm sure many people in the audience missed at least one of them.

Shear Madness is a hilarious comedy/mystery that allows the audience to work together to figure out the mystery.

The Awesome 80's Prom, Off-Broadway (2005)

Definitely a fun interactive show. As long as you get into the fun and are aware that there's a coat check in the basement, so you can dress up in 80's costumes and stash your non-80's coats, it's a great time. Fun 80's music, dancing... complete with the nerd (carrying a Cabbage Patch Kid), the bad guy, the prom committee head, the foreign exchange student, the principal, etc.

This would have been a lot more fun if A. We had dressed up and B. We had gone with a larger group.

I recommend putting together some costumes and going with a group of friends. It's only available Saturday nights and be aware that drinks, which are very small, are also very expensive - even for New York. Plan on drinking after you leave Webster Hall, which turns into a dance club after the Prom, which you get into for free - sort of the "after prom," but the entire cast of the show is gone by that point.

Late Nite Catechism, Laguna Playhouse (2004)

Cast: Nonie Newton-Breen (Sister)

This show is hilarious. I had been told it was very funny, but couldn't imagine that it would be as funny as it turned out to be. Although Late Nite Catechism was probably a bit funnier for me, since I was raised Catholic and would be even funnier for someone who went to a Catholic school at any point in their life, everyone in the diverse audience enjoyed the show. Interactive shows are always entertaining, but this one is above any I've ever seen.

If you have a chance to see Late Nite Catechism, you must go see it. There are productions going on all over the country, so check local listings and try to see this show. Take your friends. As soon as I got home, I emailed all my friends and family and told them they need to see this show. I rarely do that, since many shows I love don't appeal to a wide audience. Late Nite Catechism appeals to everyone I can imagine.

Vicki Quade & Maripat Donovan did an amazing job writing this show. They clearly spent a lot of time making it perfect and from what I've heard everyone playing Sister does an amazing job. I hope they do more shows, since this one is really hilarious.
