Fracture (2007)

Cast: Anthony Hopkins (Ted Crawford), Ryan Gosling (Willy Beachum)
For complete info, see IMDb's Fracture page.

I'm a big fan of Anthony Hopkins and have enjoyed Ryan Gosling in everything of his that I've seen, so I was definitely expecting Fracture to be a good movie. Fortunately, it lived up to my expectations. This movie about a man who kills his wife and messes with everyone's head at the same time is very interesting. I loved the way Ted manipulated everyone and everything around him in order to get what he wanted. Willy's reaction to being played was also very well done.

Fracture is an intellectual thriller, which seems pretty rare these days. I really enjoy movies that make you think and try to figure out what has happened to the characters in the movie. Fracture is a must see for anyone who likes thrillers that aren't spelled out for you in the first couple minutes. The movie completely held my attention and kept me interested. If you missed it in theatres, rent Fracture.

Proof (2005)

Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow (Catherine), Anthony Hopkins (Robert), Jake Gyllenhaal (Hal), Hope Davis (Claire)
For additional information, see IMDb's Proof page.

Since Proof is my favorite play, I was worried and excited about the movie initially. The more clips I saw from the movie, the happier I got about the job John Madden did directing it. I was worried when IMDb listed more characters than the original four from the play, but the clips of the movie were true to the play, so I had faith that these were very small parts and didn't have a big impact on the integrity of the play. Fortunately, this was true.

Proof was very well done and I can't wait for it to be released on DVD so that I can own my favorite play and my favorite musical on DVD by mid-2006. I never thought that would be possible. I am so happy with this movie. I recommended it to many people before I had a chance to see it, since it was released the day before my wedding. Lucky for me, they did a good job with the movie, so I had recommended the movie wisely.

I highly recommend the movie and play Proof!

Alexander (2004)

Cast: Colin Farrell (Alexander), Angelina Jolie (Olympias), Anthony Hopkins (Old Ptolemy), Connor Paolo (Young Alexander)
For complete cast info, see IMDb's Alexander page.

Since the story interests me, the cast was very well done (in spite of the fact that Angelina Jolie is only a couple years older than Colin Farrell), Oliver Stone was directing, and everything else seemed to be perfectly aligned, I had high hopes for Alexander. Apparently, that wasn't wise.

Seeing this movie on Thanksgiving before going over to dinner was not the best idea, either. Before we even touched food, we were already tired. Alexander is a LONG movie (even for those in the almost 3 hour range, it dragged).

They seemed to spend too much time on things that meant little to the story and not enough on some of the key interesting parts of the story. I definitely wished we'd waited till it was on DVD. Perhaps we could have fast-forwarded through the boring parts. And if not, we could have at least been multi-tasking.

Oliver Stone really disappointed me. He had amazing actors and could have done so much with a movie about Alexander. Instead, it seemed like a wasted 3 hours.

Hearts in Atlantis (2001)

Cast: Anthony Hopkins (Ted Brautigan), Anton Yelchin (Bobby Garfield), Hope Davis (Elizabeth Garfield), Mika Boorem (Carol Gerber), David Morse (Adult Bobby Garfield)
For complete cast, see IMDb's Hearts in Atlantis page.

I didn't read the book, but I definitely enjoyed the movie. A strange man moves into an apartment above a young boy and his widowed mother in the 1960's. A friendship quickly forms between the young boy and the man and discovers he has a mysterious gift. I don't want to spoil the movie, since it's definitely worth seeing, but the man changes their lives forever.
