The Police, Honda Center - Anaheim (2007)

After the poor performance on the Grammy Awards, I was worried about The Police sounding good in concert. However, we figured they had plenty of time to practice after the Grammy's, so we'd try it.

If you go in comparing them to Sting with his huge band, you may be disappointed. Same thing if you expect an amazing video show or fire twirling and other amazing effects you'd see in a Madonna or U2 concert. But, if you expect a good old-fashioned concert with just three guys in a great band, The Police concert reunion tour is definitely a great idea!

Our group was all impressed. Since they don't have new songs out, just the songs everyone knows and loves on a new album. This means that (unlike the horrible Depeche Mode concert tour) you won't hear songs you don't know at this concert. You'll recognize them all (or at least most of them if you weren't a huge fan of The Police), and you'll enjoy the concert. The guys still look pretty good and sound great.

I'd forgotten how impressive Stewart Copeland is live. It'd been a long time since I saw him live. He's really a lot of fun to watch in concert.

The only down side of the night happened before The Police took the stage. Sting's son's band (Fiction Plane) was horrible. We hadn't planned to see it, but I had to stay at work late and we ended up not having time for a real dinner and chose to just go to the Honda Center and eat dinner there. If you're seeing The Police when Fiction Plane is still opening for them (I know they're not doing all the tour stops), do not make this same mistake. Show up late as you normally would when there's an opening act, and miss as much of Fiction Plane as you can without missing The Police!
