The Producers, tour, Pantages Theatre - LA (2003)

Cast: Jason Alexander (Max Bialystock), Martin Short (Leo Bloom), Gary Beach (Roger De Bris), Angie Schworer (Ulla), and many other very talented performers

I was very excited about seeing Jason Alexander live finally, even though I had seen the OBC of The Producers. I was very surprised to find that the person who impressed me most of the newcomers was Martin Short. I tend not to be a big Martin Short fan. I like his comedy in small doses and I couldn't see him doing the part that Matthew Broderick performed so perfectly on Broadway. Martin Short does an amazing job as Leo Bloom and Jason Alexander does an okay job as Max Bialystock. Out of the three actors I've seen perform the roll of Max, Jason Alexander is by far my least favorite. Many people would initially think this is just because I saw Nathan Lane perform this on Broadway and clearly he's the ultimate Max. However, Brad Oscar (Nathan Lane's understudy) was also amazing as Max, so it's not that I can only see one person in the part.

Most of the cast of the touring production is very impressive. I was disappointed in Jason Alexander, but perhaps having already liked him in a few things I'd seen (though nothing was live) I expected too much of him.

Overall, the show is a lot of fun whether you see it on Broadway or on tour.
