Contact, tour, Ahmanson Theatre - LA (2001)

I don't have the cast information for this, since the program is gone, but it's probably best not to name any names where this is concerned anyway.

I will never understand how Contact managed to get the Tony award for best musical. Aida was robbed - probably because The Lion King got the award the last time Disney put together a musical. That's the only way this makes sense. I had already seen Aida, so I expected a lot from Contact. Instead of living up to my expectations, it was one of the worst shows I've ever seen (including many off-off-Broadway shows).

The three acts of Contact have nothing to do with each other. The first two are barely tolerable and the third is mediocre at best. I know that Contact won the award based solely on the third act, but I don't see how it would deserve the award even if the third act was the whole show. Yes, Contact was the first Broadway musical to play Huey Lewis and the News instead of having live vocal and instrumental performances. That's unique, definitely. So give it a special award, don't give it the coveted Tony award for best musical.

My advice: See something else - ANYTHING else. Stay far away from Contact.
